a help video for just getting started with a song is now available if
you need assistance! See the link below...
5.2.2025 ___New Video coming for Song Production Help
Hello everyone!
I'm making another video to help you through your final project,
focusing on Song Production. If you need to access the computer lab
cabinet, please email me and I'll share the code.
This is important: you may use AI assistance, but do not produce an
entire AI-generated song as your own! I want you to have the experience
of working with the audio in Logic!
I'm open to AI assistance with lyric writing, or making very limited
beat snippets or samples. If you use AI, please disclose how you used
the AI toward the production of your work.
If you're unable to open Logic on one of the school computers due to
another user having not logged out properly, you can restart the machine
by clicking on the "..." button in the initial UIW login screen. It
should allow you to restart with login credentials. I'm looking into
making the computers automatically reboot when a user logs out.
Also, PLEASE reach out for help if you need it! I'll be purchasing plane
wi-fi to make myself available for assistance Tuesday evening, if
needed. So please ask for help if you need it and I'll do my best to be
there (virtually).
Have a good finals week!

04.15.2025_lecture 15 (4.29.2025) posted! final
assignment posted!
please note: I WILL BE PHYSICALLY UNAVAILABLE NEXT TUESDAY due to a work
trip. I'm planning to have some kind of internet access in the plane and
then again after I've landed. if you need any assistance whatsoever,
please send me an email, call, or text, and we can meet virtually via
zoom or teams.
if you're planning to do the video game option, please watch for a
crappy alpha version of the game being posted late tonight! for that
assignment, I will insert your looped track into the game and send the
finished version back to you! (no obligation to download or install
Unity Engine)
this is also another reminder that I will accept late work for partial
credit. this can be the difference between passing and failing!!! you
are welcome to ask any question about any assignment you need help with,
even if it's from the first few weeks!
you should still have access to the lab during finals week,
uninterrupted. if something goes wrong with your access, it is
recommended you email me, Evan, or Dr. Bergmann right away!
it's also come to my attention that some other classes have been using
the lab for lecture courses. you are allowed to use the lab during their
lectures if you must, but please use headphones while the class is
engaged in the lecture. if you're asked to leave, please email me!
happy recording!

FINAL ASSIGNMENT (due 05.09.2025 before midnight)
FINAL ASSIGNMENT: Project of your Choice (due by
05.09.2025)
The final assignment offers an opportunity for you to choose your
own project.
Here are some suggestions:
An original song (~3:00)
A cover noticeably different from the original (not a replica)
A concert piece, mixed in Logic (you may use MuseScore for the
scoring)
Piece for a short film - 1.5 to 2 minutes with your own film
Looped music for a simple video game (to be supplied by me!)
You have the option to complete the final project either using logic
or protools, both available on the lab machines.
Your project should demonstrate tasteful use of plugins,
equalization (EQ), and no dead-space at the end of the recording.
submit your music as an .mp3 file. you are encouraged to retain the
.wav file for your own records.
the mix, arrangement, and recorded instruments/voice do not need to
be perfect - consider this project as an applied rough draft for
work yet to come.
if you have any questions, please email!

Assignment 7: Short Musique Concréte piece
Assignment 7 asks you to compose a short (approx. 1 minute)
musiquestion concrete piece using Logic.
You'll need to record sounds using your phone or microphone device
and import them into Logic for manipulation. You may also simply
record yourself talking, or environmental sounds.
Additionally, you may use midi instruments alongside these "found"
sounds.
Your piece should be about a minute, and use the following:
plugins with simple automation
use of panning automation
audio "chopping" and manipulation (Flex pitch, slice, etc)
cohesion through themes, repetition, unifying sounds
for reference, see the works we listened to in class, listed at the
bottom of our class website.
While you're manipulating sounds, keep in mind that you're making a
genuine piece of music - consider structure, interest, and cohesion.
submit your piece as a .mp3 file via canvas.
be on the lookout for an additional help video coming soon. happy
composing!
